Hey, guys. I'm a beginning Pokemon Hacker, and I have one really big question that I need to ask.
Why is it that hackers use aliases instead of their real names? I was just curious, because I know that if I made, say, the next Liquid Crystal, and used an alias, many of my friends and family would have their doubts. So why not use my real name? That way, I can achieve recognition for my hard work. I'm sure there is a reason, but if anyone could help me out, that would be great! |

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and assume that HeroOfWar is not the name on your birth certificate. Why did you choose to use that name online? The same reasons any of us did. We felt like using an online name that we liked, and in many cases we wanted to protect our privacy. My friends and family know that I make hacks and believe me without me using my actual name on hacks, because they hear me talk about it and they see me work on it in my free time. I don't use my real name because I don't want everyone and their mum trying to contact me in more "real life" ways. I can safely assume that a similar situation applies to most of the other hackers here.

Also, to some extent, our online names are like a different persona. Personally, I hate my real name, I only use it in real life as that is what people should call me. Online, I can be whoever, so I chose this because I prefer it. It's just a sense of identity really.

I always put my real name on the copyright notice of my programs, since that's the legally correct way to do it, but since ROM hacks are in the legal gray zone anyway I guess it doesn't matter much.
And as others have already said, there's the privacy thing as well. PS: If I made a nice game, I would put both my nickname and real name on it - it would take just a google search to find what my name is anyway. Last edited by cosarara; 7th September 2014 at 11:00 PM. |

Thanks, guys! I was mainly curious, because like cosara said, there is a legal grey zone in rom hacking, so I wasn't sure if it was because of that, or just because of privacy.
I guess it'll be a personal decision for myself to use my real name or not. |
